Dear Friends, A group called One Billion Rising www.onebillionrising.org is hoping that a billion of us around the world will do something ‘rising’ on February 14th this year in protest against the world-wide abuse of women. (See for example the leader page of the Guardian on Jan 12th for an editorial and an article by the organiser of the onebillion organisation.)
I think that we may be at a watershed moment. Incidents and events around the world, for example the shooting of Malala Yousafzai in Pakistan, the rapes and murders of women in India, the disclosures of Jimmy Savile’s 50-year licence to abuse in the UK, the publication last Thursday of the UK Ministry of Justice’s overview of sexual offending, and many many other instances all over the world, seem to have brought us to a point where many of us are saying ‘that’s enough’. It may be that, in a system so far from equlibrium, our small local actions can become ‘strange attractors’ for major system change. Perhaps the system now, as in the 60′s and 70′s, is available for change, and a push from us might have major consequences.
Please visit the site, and see what action you and others might be able to take on ‘Valentine’sday.’
